What Are Behavioural Addictions?
Behavioural addictions can sometimes be referred to as impulse control disorders. It’s a type of addiction that sees the sufferer being seized almost, by a compulsion to carry out a certain behaviour. This can be on a repeated basis, despite sometimes very negative consequences. Unlike alcohol addiction or even drug addiction, there is no external chemical substance on which the sufferer becomes dependent.
This type of disorder however, does revolve around an internal chemical in relation to the brain’s reward system. These are indeed very similar to those caused by a psychological addiction to different substances and the negative impact on an addict can be equally as devastating.
Different Types Of Behavioural Addiction
There are numerous different types of behavioural addiction. Theoretically speaking, it’s quite possible for any activity to become the main focus of a behavioural addiction, as long as it provides the necessary brain ‘reward’ response.
There are of course more common activities that would appear to be more widespread. These include the likes of gambling, video games, shopping, porn, love, sex, internet use, risky behaviour and even plastic surgery, food and exercise.
Signs & Symptoms of Behavioural Addiction
It’s important to note that signs and symptoms of behavioural addictions will differ with each different type of behavioural addiction. A good example of this would be the injuries seen on someone with an exercise addiction could be entirely different to the injuries or even obesity that a video game or internet addict may suffer from.
Generally speaking, however, any behavioural addiction should be quite evident by an increased and obsessive like focus on that particular behaviour. You may see an addict withdraw from previous activities and even loved ones in a bid to spend more time taking part in that particular activity/behaviour. This may become more evident over time as the addiction becomes more deep rooted.
