    Internet Addiction/Internet Addiction Treatment

The internet is something the vast majority of us use day in and day out. We use it for work and we use it recreationally but did you know people can actually become addicted to the internet? Today we’re looking at internet addiction along with the help and addiction treatment that’s available here at Infinity Addiction.

    What Is Internet Addiction?

The term addiction is defined by the NHS as simply ‘not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it can be harmful to you’.

Addiction can manifest in many ways.  For example, there are common addictions such as drugs and alcohol and it’s very easy to interpret, but what about novel addiction problems like the internet? Can it have the same kind of effects?

There is a great debate that surrounds whether you can actually become addicted to the internet or simply abuse use but what we do know is that there are many individuals who become socially dysfunctional through continued use of the internet.

This can be harmful on both on a psychological level and an emotional level. It can also become harmful in a physical sense if the user begins to neglect their own hygiene and personal needs.

Signs & Symptoms Of Internet Addictions

There are numerous signs and symptoms associated with internet addiction. These include:

    • Spending an excessive amount of time on the internet on tasks that aren’t work related
    • Unreasonable behaviour when internet connections are slow/non-existent
    • Unreasonable behaviour/anxiety or irritation when internet use is blocked or unavailable
    • Social isolation as user chooses time on internet over time with others
    • Poor performance at school or work due to internet usage
    • Increased mood swings
    • Lack of interest in current relationships, even marriage and sexual.

Internet Addiction & Its Different Forms

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises with internet addiction is that it can take many different forms.

Unlike drug addiction or alcohol addiction which is simply defined as excessive use of drugs or alcohol; internet addiction can take the form of social media addiction or porn site addiction or even news and sports site addiction.

It’s these variants however, that allow us at Infinity Addiction to determine the best possible addiction treatment option.
